Military Academy Chicago - Operating simultaneously and closely during those years was the Owen Academy, an informal school using the buildings of the Baptist Theological Seminary to prepare students for admission before the opening of the new University of Chicago.

Harper's teachers at the academy held university rank and one of them, Amos Alonzo Stagg, coached football for a time at both institutions. Two alumni of the academy - Jesse Harper [1902], at Notre Dame, and Wallace Wade [1913], at Alabama and Duke - became coaches who were later elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.

The academy was also a participant in the first high school basketball game played in Illinois just one season (in 1893) after James Naismith discovered the game in remote Massachusetts. Military academies are not "art camps". Students who enjoy a structured, academically challenging environment and want to work in collaborative teams are encouraged to apply. Air Force Academy High School accepts applications from incoming freshmen and transfer cadets only.

The child must also reside in the city of Chicago. Parents should visit the Chicago Public Schools webpage to find information, required documents and required application forms. The school focuses on advanced science and mathematics, requiring high test scores and grades in those areas.

A desire to join the military or study aerospace in college is also highly recommended. The traditional JROTC program is held at one of 37 participating high schools and is a voluntary program.
